Figs and Olives: Divine Benefits

4 min read 14 views

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

“By the fig and the olive,
And [by] Mount Sinai,
And [by] this secure city [Mecca],
We have certainly created man in the best of stature;
Then We return him to the lowest of the low,
Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds, for they will have a reward uninterrupted.”

(Surat At-Tin: 1–6)

The divine oath in Surat At-Tin guides us to a remarkable and wondrous framework that combines the geography of the heavens (to refine the soul) with the chemistry of the earth (to revive the body). The Qur’anic text thus shows that the integration of spiritual and physical care is the hidden secret behind preserving the human being at the pinnacle of creation and formation: “We have certainly created man in the best of stature.”

First: Spatial Significance and the Geography of Prophethood

The opening verses of the surah contain a sacred geographical map that encapsulates the history of divine revelation and the places where major heavenly messages descended.

The oath “by the fig and the olive” is not merely a reference to two fruits; rather, it is a profound allusion to the blessed land of the Levant and Jerusalem, the homeland of these trees and the cradle of the prophethood of Jesus (peace be upon him).

Then the divine statement connects this with “Mount Sinai,” where Moses (peace be upon him) received revelation and where the early call to monotheism was proclaimed.

The oath reaches its climax with “this secure city,” Mecca, the sanctuary of the final prophet, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

This geographic progression connects the lands from which the light of spiritual guidance radiated. It is as if God is informing us that the human soul does not reach its highest spiritual form except by being illuminated by the light of these three messages that emerged from these great regions.

Second: The Nutritional Miracle and the “Chemistry of Youth”

(The Fig and the Olive Together)

If the spatial symbolism nourishes the soul, the material benefits of these two fruits represent a striking example of preserving the human body and protecting it from biological decline, as mentioned in the verse: “Then We return him to the lowest of the low.”

Many modern biological studies have shown that consuming figs and olives together creates a unique nutritional synergy:

  • Figs are rich in soluble fiber, powerful antioxidants (such as phenols), and essential minerals like calcium and magnesium that support bone structure.

  • Olives, especially extra virgin, provide monounsaturated fatty acids (like oleic acid) and vitamin E, enhancing nutrient absorption from figs and protecting cells against chronic inflammation and cancer.

• The Secret of Metallothioneins

In medical research, studies by Japanese research teams have highlighted a vital protein compound produced by the human brain known as metallothioneins.

This substance plays a key biological role in:

  • Maintaining cellular vitality

  • Slowing aging symptoms

  • Reducing harmful cholesterol

  • Strengthening heart muscle

The body produces it efficiently between the ages of 15 and 35, after which production gradually declines, especially after age 40.

• The Remarkable Synergy

The astonishing finding in these studies is that this compound cannot be effectively obtained from plants unless figs and olives are combined. The active compounds in figs only release their full biological potential when paired with complementary substances in olives.

• Numerical Precision

These studies concluded that the ideal ratio for maximum biological benefit is:
1 fig to 7 olives.

This coincides, in a striking way, with the Qur’anic mention:

  • “Fig” is mentioned explicitly once in the Qur’an

  • “Olive” is mentioned 7 times (6 directly, and once indirectly in Surat Al-Mu’minun)

This remarkable harmony between the geography of revelations and the medicine of the body reveals that Surat At-Tin is a precise divine composition that cares for the human being in existence and thought, guiding them toward maintaining their best form, both spiritually and physically.

Glory be to the One who placed secrets in the verses beyond human comprehension, making the fruits of the earth a remedy for bodily ailments, and the guidance of the heavens a cure for the soul.

Praised is Allah, the best of creators, and all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
